Branches of the Bible Tree
***************

When Bridgett and Terri began researching the Bible surname, all indications were that everyone with this surname was descended from the same individual, Hans Adam Biebel. Although we found this concept hard to believe, it was a long time before we were able to locate anyone with the Bible surname that didn't belong to this lineage. We are pleased to be able to tell you that we have found two more Bible families that are not (directly, if at all) connected to the Hans Adam Biebel who emigrated in 1750. Some of you reading this who were having difficulties seeing a connection between your family and the TN/VA bunch, may be connected to one of these other two.

In the Annette K. Burgert book on eighteenth century immigrants to America from Alsace that we mentioned in our last newsletter, there was information given on another Biebel immigrant. This was Johann Daniel Biebel, known as Daniel. According to this book, he was also born in Goersdorf, Alsace; but his parents and grandparents were not the same as those of Hans/Johann Adam. We do believe, however, that there surely was some familial connection somewhere further back. J. Daniel was born 30 Oct 1727 and arrived in America in 1750 on board the ship "Edinburgh". He married Maria

Margaret Grob on 14 May 1754 in Lancaster, PA. They had 9 children. Daniel Bible died in Lancaster, PA on 2 Sept. 1773. (records from Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster) Margaret died 24 Apr 1800 in Lebanon, PA. There were 5 children (1 son and 4 daughters) living at that time, according to what was written in the church records at the time of her death.

We have recently made contact with several descendants of Daniel and his wife and we'd like to welcome them to the ranks of Bible researchers. Through them and other sources, we have identified 3 of Daniel's children. They are (to the best of our knowledge): Christiana Elizabeth-born 11 Dec 1756, Johan Jacob-born 12 Sept 1758, and Anna Maria - born 11 Jun 1761. Apparently, one of the reasons we had not found them before is that this family stayed in the northern states and Hans Adam's family went south. We hadn't really looked in the north for Bibles yet.

The third Bible line is one on which we have very little information. Terri contacted a gentleman in California who knew very little about his lineage. He said he was descended from a Joseph Bible who emigrated from Ireland. He thinks the family was first in NY and then moved to Colorado Springs, CO where 13 children were born. Many of the descendants of this family are now living on the West coast. We have heard rumors about a Joseph Bible who allegedly moved from VA to OH around 1800 and then went to Ireland, only to return to America in the mid 1800s. If anyone knows anything more about that rumor, we'd love to hear about it. (con't page 2)

EDITORS NOTE:   In our last issue, we presented new evidence regarding the ancestry of Hans Adam Bible. This evidence is very different from what had

been reported by R. Donahue Bible some 30 years ago. For those interested in the manner of research Donahue used in his quest for information in Germany, Donahue has sent this information to Bridgett. If you would like a copy of this, please send request via USPS with SASE, and she will be glad to send you a copy.

(continued from page 1)
We do know that the immigrant ancestor of this branch was Thomas Bible (son of Joseph Bible), b. 14 Apr 1847 in Killarney, Ireland. He and his wife ended up in Colorado Springs, CO, where they had 13 children by the 1880s. We'll have some of those names next time.

NEW DISCOVERY!

We think we may have found a sister for old Hans Adam Biebel (or "Hansi" as we like to call him!). In the Annette Burgert book referred to in our last issue, there is an entry on a Nicklaus Sch_ffer. On 21 Apr 1750, at the Preuschdorf Lutheran Church, he married Maria Elsabetha Biebel, daughter of Hans Georg Biebel and Maria Eva (Burckhardt) There is a notation in the Church records that this couple "went to the New Land" with their children. Maria Elisabetha is further identified as being the "sister of Joh. Adam Biebel, 1750 immigrant" The Sch_ffers immigrated in 1767 on the Hamilton.

The Sch_ffers had 8 children born in Alsace between 1751 and 1766. Apparently all the children immigrated with the parents. We have the names and dates of the children if anyone is interested. We have no idea at this time where they settled in America.

EDITOR'S NOTE: It was reported in our last issue that Annette K. Burgert's bailiwick was Western Europe. That was an unintentional error. Her expertise is in 18th century records and immigration from the Palatine and Alsace areas.

Queries
***************

We have received some queries since our last issue. Some were sent to the Bible Mailing List on the Internet, so we have included them here also for those of you who would not have seen them there.

Ed Bible <bible@timken.com> writes:

I really don't know a whole lot about my relatives. My father's name is Harold Duane Bible (1934- ), and he has lived in Ohio for the last 30-plus years, but was born and raised in Corbin, Ky. His father's name was Carl Baltz Bible (1909-74). His father was Hezekiah Baltz Bible who was from Marysville?, Tennessee.

Does any one recognize these names?

Vi Wooden (Oklahoma City, OK) <Wooden336@worldnet.att.net> writes:
My g-g-grandfather is Lewis Bible Miller b. ca1838 IN, d. ca1895 Newton Co. AR; and I'm trying to determine his parents/siblings .
This is what the 1850 Hamilton Co, IN census tells me:

Daniel Miller age 26 b. OH
Elizabeth Miller age 23 b. OH
Lydia Miller age 1 b. IN
Lewis Miller age 12 b. IN...believe this to be my Lewis Bible Miller

Listed just above this family in the census is:

Calvin Shull age 25 b. OH
Lydia Shull age 28 b. OH
Catherine Miller age 10 b. IN

This leads me to believe that parents of Lewis are not still living in 1850, and maybe Daniel and Catherine are his siblings.

So, Bible descendants, is there anyone that has information that would link Bible to Miller or Shull? I would greatly appreciate any help.

So far, I've traced my family back to a John Bible (born 1792, Virginia)and his wife, Magdalene. They appear in the Rockingham County, Virginia 1850 census records with two sons: Jacob (my direct line), and George. I am thinking this (my) John *could be* the son of Hans Adam, Junior. However, I am confused as to who the Magdalene is. The only Magdalene I know of is the one married to Hans Adam, Junior (i.e. my John's mother).

I would love to know if anyone has any documentation proving, or disproving, that the John Bible who married Rebecca Coffelt was married before he married her. I have seen him linked with an Elizabeth Shoemaker and a ? Wilson in various family files, but the marriage to Rebecca is the only one documented. I'd also like to find a definitive birth date for this particular John. It seems to range from 1754 to 1776, depending on whose records one looks at.

Bridgett Schneider (See addresses on p.2)
I have been trying to find what happened to Eve Bible after Hans Adam died. The last mention of her in any research done or found is that she and son, George, put up 1200 pounds for the execution of Hansi's will. There is no mention of a "widow's dowry" anywhere that I can find (and possibly this record was burned in the civil war). I did find that George sold some land in Rockingham County VA in 1817, this land was his father's land that Hansi obtained through a land grant (unsure of this) in 1789. Could this be a clue that this may have been when Eve died?

Also, I have been asked by "several" researchers of the Christian line if I knew anything about Catherine Folman. I do not, does anyone else know?
