Capt. Thomas Bible
Military History and Travels

of Capt. Thomas Bible,
during the War Between the States
from original entry into service until discharge.

On the next few pages you will find the diary kept by Capt. Thomas Bible of Co. "C", 8th. Regiment. Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, 1st. Brigade, 3rd. Division, 23rd Army Corp, Army of Ohio. This diary includes many names and places. During his enlistment Thomas and his company traveled 13 states and Washington, D.C.

Almost 40 years ago, Mr. Donahue Bible of Mohawk, TN obtained permission from Thomas' grandson to transcribe the diary. Donahue has put together a booklet entitled "Their Eyes Have Seen The Glory . . . East Tennessee Unionists in the Civil War . . 1861-1865" which includes a copy of this diary. Donahue has given me permission to reproduce the diary for publishing on the internet. I must thank Donahue very much as this diary tells much about the life of a soldier in the Civil War.

This diary along with Capt. Bible's sabre and handgun are on view at the Nathanael Greene Museum in Greeneville, Greene County, TN.

Along with the diary, I have also included a list of men who served with Capt. Thomas Bible from Company "C" and a poem by Capt. Tom written in 1865.

This soldier is also a distant relative of mine. During a visit to Greene County in the spring of 1997, I visited many cemeteries, including the family cemetery called Gum Springs where Thomas is buried. I was able to take the below pictures of Thomas' tombstone and the stone slab provided by the Veterans Administration for military veterans.
